Where Skiing can be “Syrias,” but “Israeli” Nice!

Nine ski lifts in Israel! Five of them are double chair lifts and two of them are T-bars. So, hang on for a “I didn’t know you could ski in Israel” experience! Snowy and cold from late December to mid-March, and forest green the rest of the year, Mount Hermon towers in the Golan Heights between Syria to the East, Lebanon north and west and Israel to the south. One of the many nature reserves in the country of Israel, the Hermon site is just above the Biblical site of Dan, one of the main tributaries of the upper Jordan River.

Someone told me there was even a “Beersheva Ski Club.” Of course, from “Dan to Beersheva” was the biblical north and south borders of Israel. Beersheva in the south is a sea-level desert, and a half-day drive brings you to the Hermon in the north, almost six-thousand feet above sea level. These are the delightful contrasts of a tiny land. There are four distinctly different climate regions. A morning tour through the Golan Heights at the foot of Mount Herman may require winter clothes, while the afternoon boat ride on the Sea of Galilee, about 700-feet below sea level, at the foot of the Mount of Beatitudes, might be in shirt-sleeves.

Snow in the Bible?
The contrasts are vivid. The bible mentions snow twenty-times! Usually, the mention of snow is a contrast. For example, Isaiah uses the colorful contrast to teach a comforting lesson, “Come now, and let us reason together, saith the Lord: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.” (Isaiah 1:18) In that sense, there’s a way to make mistakes, “serious” or thoughtless, be forgiven, that is “really nice!”
